Kev McCurdy – History

All About Me

Practive with Swords

Kevin McCurdyI was accepted onto the 3yr Performers’ course at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 1988 (before it was given Royal status). During my acting and movement training, (which involved mime, contemporary jazz, “Yang style” Tai chi chuan, tap, ballet), I started stage combat training, which I fell in love with on the 1st lesson, and went onto become an assistant to the Fight Master for the next 5 years.

I graduated from college in 1991, got my Equity card from performing a lead role in a Radio 4 play and I was granted full stage combat tutor status in 1993.

Mixing the movement styles I’d acquired with the acting, I developed my own style and started teaching at the Bridge Theatre Training Co and at The Oxford School of Drama.

During that time, I went onto Equitys’ Fight Directors exam course and after completing the requirements, which took me 3.5 yrs, (black belt level in martial arts, Foil and Sabre sport fencing to Gold Standard level, St Johns Ambulance 1st Aid courses, observation of other Equity FDs in action, passing a 10 day exam), I qualified and became the 1st black (and still only) Equity Professional Fight Director since the SBFD (Society of British Fight Directors) was formed in 1969.

Since then, I’ve been very blessed to have choreographed and also action performed in all fields of stage, television, film, video games, music videos, around the UK and rest of the world.

I left The Bridge and Oxford School of Drama and became Resident Fight Master back at Royal Welsh College and have been there since 2005.

The rest, as they say, is history.
